Ranking Member Huffman Statement on Trump Administration’s Approval of Bull Mountain Coal Mine Expansion

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources Ranking Member Huffman issued the following statement:

“Just days after the Supreme Court gutted crucial environmental review standards, the Trump administration is already exploiting the ruling to reward polluters. The approval of the Bull Mountain coal mine expansion – a project repeatedly struck down by the courts – is a sweetheart deal for Signal Peak, a company with a long rap sheet of environmental crimes and workplace rights violations.

This expansion would make Bull Mountain one of the single largest sources of greenhouse gas pollution in the country. And for what? So a company that just got off DOJ probation can export more dirty coal, profit off more pollution, and leave Americans to deal with dirtier air and higher energy costs.

Worse still, the administration rammed this approval through by cutting the public out of the process entirely by invoking a fake emergency to sidestep scrutiny. This is a blatant abuse of power that threatens the very foundation of environmental protections across the nation.”
